Rationale

Information Technology (IT) or Information and communication(s) technology (ICT) (also Infocomm, esp. in Asia) is a broad subject concerned with technology and other aspects of managing and processing information, especially in large organizations.

Overview of E-learning Setup

In particular, IT deals with the use of electronic computers and computer software to convert, store, protect, process, transmit, and retrieve information. For that reason, computer professionals are often called IT specialists, and the division of a company or university that deals with software technology is often called the IT department.

Other names for the latter are information services (IS) or management information services (MIS), managed service providers (MSP).

In the UK education system Information Technology was formally integrated into the school curriculum when the National Curriculum was devised. It was quickly realised that the work covered was useful in all subjects. With the arrival of the internet and the broadband connections to all schools, the application of IT knowledge, skills and understanding in all subjects became a reality. This change in emphasis has resulted in a change of name from IT (Information Technology) to ICT (Information and Communication Technology).

ICT in Education can be understood as the application of digital equipment to all aspects of teaching and learning. It is present in almost all schools and is of growing influence.

The Association of Personal Computer User Groups (APCUG) is a nationwide organization that helps local computer user groups by facilitating communications between local groups, computer hardware and software makers, and hardware and software vendors.

A non-profit corporation as designated by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, APCUG also helps member groups and their officers fulfil their education goals with support materials and shared knowledge and experience.

While a large number of member groups in APCUG are oriented towards the Microsoft DOS and Windows operating systems, many member groups include members using a variety of operating systems and provide services to meet all of their needs.

Membership is open to all microcomputer user groups. APCUG itself is not a user group; only user groups themselves are members. APCUG product and services are offered to group leaders, who can choose to share those products and services with their members.

The Information and Computer Sciences Centre is one of 24 Subject Centres funded by the Higher Education Academy. The primary aim is to enhance the student learning experience in ICS environments. This is done by providing subject-based support to both ICS individuals and departments to promote quality learning and teaching by stimulating the sharing of good practice and innovation. The Centre for Information and Computer Sciences provides a range of resources to help in teaching and curriculum development.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is defined as intelligence exhibited by an artificial (non-natural, man-made) entity. Although "AI" has a strong sci-fi connotation, it forms a vital branch of computer science, dealing with intelligent behaviour in machines. When an AI system is embodied in its working environment and interacts with and learns from it, it becomes known as an Intelligent Agent (IA).
