Personal Development
Rationale
Personal development comprises activities that improve self-knowledge and identity, develop talents and potential, build human capital and employability, enhance quality of life and realize dreams and aspirations. The concept of personal development covers a wider field than self-development or self-help; it also includes developing other people , and by extension refers to the methods, programs, tools, techniques, and assessment systems used in personal development.

What is Personal Development?
The term may also refer to
To understand this further: a person can have different personalities in different contexts (at home / at office / at parties etc) but these share common threads of who he/she is and this can be called the "personal self". When someone is referring to personal development then he/she is meaning a full and total transformation from deep within and not just a temporary personality change for a specific occasion or context. |

Area of work
There are certain areas of life (different personalities as mentioned above) which are considered in personal development. Personal development concerns with development in all of these areas. These areas are (the list is in no way a comprehensive list, please feel free to add more areas/subareas to it).
Research and contribution: Development in this area means that you are contributing something original to the society and to the world and to your community. You are using your potential to make a difference to the world.
Mental knowledge and learning: Are you learning something new each day of the week and each week of the year? Development in this area excites you and keeps your mind lubricated. You remain open to new skills and keep pushing the envelope and stretching your mind.
Work, career and job: Improve your knowledge in the field you work in in order to do the job you want, have the opportunities you want, etc.
Financial matters: Gain more wealth while working less. Money management (mortgage, real estate, market, etc) is one of the many are working on.
Self help, character, spirituality and emotions: Become able to control your feelings, how you see others, your perceptions of the world. Develop your true self.
Physical health: Learn to exercise, to be able to maintain the motivation to do so.
Fun and adventure: Make your life more interesting by doing things you don't do generally. Do something people don't know you for.
Intimate relationship: Revive the old flame between you and your partner, develop your sensitive side, the place where you listen to your partner needs.
Home, family and relatives: Developing home abilities such as cooking, washing, cleaning. Learn how to make your family proud of you.
Social circle, friends and clubs: Learn how to create/develop long lasting relationships with your friends, how to approach people you don't know, to convey the message you want to send.

Competence and Skills

Competence is a standardized requirement for an individual to properly perform a specific job. It encompasses a combination of knowledge, skills and behavior utilised to improve performance. More generally, competence is the state or quality of being adequately or well qualified, having the ability to perform a specific role.
For instance, management competency includes the traits of systems thinking and emotional intelligence, and skills in influence and negotiation. A person possesses a competence as long as the skills, abilities, and knowledge that constitute that competence are a part of him, enabling the person to perform effective action within a certain workplace environment. Therefore, one might not lose knowledge, a skill, or an ability, but still lose a competence if what is needed to do a job well changes.

In psychometrics, applied linguistics and education, Competency Evaluation is a means for teachers to determine the ability of their students in other ways besides the standardized test.
Usually this includes portfolio assessment. In language testing, it may also include student interviews and checklists (e.g., on a scale from 1 to 5 the student or teacher rates his or her ability to do such tasks as introducing one's family). While various governments in Europe and Canada often employ competency evaluation to evaluate bilingual abilities of public employees, it has only recently begun to receive attention from the United States where large testing corporations have dominated language evaluation with financially lucrative performance tests such as the TOEFL, MCAT and SAT tests. Fred Genesee at McGill University is one of the leading researchers in competency evaluation. |

A Positive Role Model carries out a role demonstrating values, ways of thinking and acting, which are considered good in that role. Others hopefully will follow the example. A woman professor can be seen as a role model for other women, on the strength of her furthering of the profile of women in academia. Alternatively, she could be seen as a role model for aspiring academics, regardless of their gender, on the strength of her academic achievements and/or dedication to her chosen discipline.
Parents can be positive role models helping their children learn adult ways or they can be negative role models. In dysfunctional families parents tend to be primarily negative role models.
This can be
- In Sociology the term does not necessarily imply a good example; see e.g. Observational learning.
- Morally: moral example (in ethics)
- At work: Model worker or Stakhanovite (in socialism)
The act of picking a role model consists of first evaluating what are ones own values (answering the question "what kind of things are important to me") then finding a person (usually a famous person) that exhibits a majority of those points and then emulating that person.
