Key English Test (KET)

KET Introduction

KET is Cambridge ESOL's exam which recognises the ability to deal with everyday written and spoken English at a basic level.

There are two versions of KET available: KET and KET for Schools. Both follow exactly the same format and the level of the question papers is identical. The only difference is that the content and treatment of topics in KET for Schools have been particularly targeted at the interests and experience of school pupils.

Is KET for you?

If this describes your skills now, or describes the level of skills you are working towards, then KET is the right exam for you.

What will KET do for you?

Cambridge ESOL is a department of the world-famous and historic University of Cambridge. Attaining one of its certificates is an achievement and a reward in itself. However, there are many other benefits to taking KET:

1. a KET certificate is valid for life. You will not need to take the exam again

2. KET is a truly international certificate, recognised around the world for business and study purposes

3. thousands of employers, universities and government departments officially recognise KET as a basic qualification in English

4. although KET is a basic exam, it offers a chance to find out your strengths and weaknesses in using English, and gives you a pathway to higher qualifications such as the Preliminary English Test (PET) and First Certificate in English (FCE)

5. KET's 'Can Do' skills give you the confidence to use English in real situations.

Preliminary English Test (PET)

Preliminary English Test (PET)

PET is an exam for people who can use everyday written and spoken English at an intermediate level. It covers all four language skills — reading, writing, listening and speaking. Preparing for the exam is a popular way to develop and improve your language skills because it provides practical language practice in a variety of everyday work, study and leisure situations.

PET reflects the use of language in real life, such as understanding signs and announcements, and is accepted by many employers as proof of ability to use English in clerical, secretarial or managerial jobs. It is also widely accepted for use in jobs where spoken English is necessary such as tourism, retail, construction, manufacturing and engineering.

There are two versions of PET available: PET and PET for Schools. Both follow exactly the same format and the level of the question papers is identical. The only difference is that the content and treatment of topics in PET for Schools have been particularly targeted at the interests and experience of school pupils.

6. Progressing along the proficiency ladder makes me feel confident in myself. I know where I'm going, what I have to do to achieve the English level I want. It makes me highly motivated. Preparing for the exams helped me discover the beauties of English.'
Nguyen Thi Ky Binh — PET candidate

What will taking PET help you do?

PET is at Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) — an internationally recognised benchmark of language ability. The framework uses six levels to describe language ability from A1 to C2. 'Can Do' statements have been used to describe these levels in terms of real language skills.

Enjoy English!

At B1 level, typical users can be expected to:

Your preparation for PET will give you these kinds of practical language skills.

What is involved in taking the PET exam?

PET has three papers:

Reading and Writing: 1 hour 30 minutes
You need to be able to read texts from signs, journals, newspapers and magazines and understand the main points. You will need to show you can use vocabulary and structure by completing tasks such as writing a short message, and a story or letter of around 100 words. You will also need to complete an exercise involving changing the meaning of sentences.

Listening: 30 minutes (approx)
You will need to show you can understand the meaning of a range of recorded spoken material, including announcements and discussions about everyday life. You need to be able to follow the attitudes and intentions of the speakers.

Speaking: 10-12 minutes
Candidates take the Speaking test in pairs. You have to show your spoken English by taking part in conversation, asking and answering questions, and talking freely about your likes and dislikes.

Supporting you

As with all of Cambridge ESOL's certificates, there is a wide range of support to help you prepare for your exam.

While you can choose to prepare for PET on your own, many candidates prefer to take the preparation courses run by private language schools and universities in many countries.

You can access a variety of support materials from the Resources area of our website. These include a short booklet, Information for Candidates, and sample exam papers, which include sound files for the Listening test materials.

Many publishers have produced a wide choice of books and other aids to help you prepare for taking PET. Ask your local bookshop for details.

To help you prepare for PET, we provide your teachers with their own website so they can download sample exam papers, handbooks, and other teaching support material.

A world of opportunities — worldwide recognition

1. PET is a truly international certificate, recognised by administrative, industrial, and service-based employers as a qualification in intermediate English.

2. It is also accepted by a large number of educational institutions for study purposes.

3. Companies such as Coca-Cola, Nestlé, Gillette and KPMG all recognise the value of PET in their overseas offices.

Find more details on the organisations and universities that recognise PET.

'I took the exam because I wanted to find out how good I am at English. The day of the exam I felt very nervous because I've never had a similar experience before. But when I saw the tasks I felt safer and became calm. Every task was explained well and I'm just glad that I had the chance to do the exam.'
Bernd Koch — PET candidate

English for your future

1. PET offers an easy to understand pathway to other, higher qualifications such as the First Certificate in English (FCE), and the Certificate in Advanced English (CAE).

2. PET's 'Can Do' skills enable you to use English in real situations with confidence. PET exams use real-life situations and are especially designed to help you communicate more effectively in your own life and to focus your language learning on the skills you will actually need.

3. Because PET exams focus on all four communication skills — Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking — you increase your confidence in using English in everyday situations.

Your results

Each skill carries 25% of the total marks. There are two Pass grades (Pass with Merit and Pass) and certificates are awarded to candidates who achieve these grades. Candidates who achieve a grade Narrow Fail or Fail are judged not to have reached the required standard for PET.

Exam scripts are sent to Cambridge ESOL for marking and grading and the results are sent back to the centres. Candidates can also see them over the internet. If you have any questions about your results, you should contact the centre where you took the exam.

Once awarded Cambridge ESOL PET certificates are valid for life.

Candidates can access their results through the Results Online website.

Certificates in Skills for Life

Cambridge ESOL - Skills for Life

Skills for Life is the government's strategy for improving adult literacy, numeracy and ESOL skills in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. From September 2004, all qualifications for adult learners of English in the state sector which relate to the strategy must be based on the Adult ESOL Core Curriculum — a development of the National Standards for Adult Literacy — and accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA).

In response to these requirements, Cambridge ESOL is offering the full range of Certificates in ESOL Skills for Life. These qualifications provide flexible assessment of ESOL learners in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, whilst minimising the workload of teachers and administrators. They reflect the use of English in everyday life and are fully based on the Adult ESOL Core Curriculum.

The Skills for Life Certificates are:

  • available at five levels — Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2
  • wholly externally assessed, by trained and experienced examiners
  • available on demand to suit the learner and the learning provider
  • accredited by the QCA and funded by the Learning and Skills Council
  • available every day of the year, except UK public holidays

Recognising that the individual's language skills can vary quite significantly in their development, the new certificates allow learners to enter for different modes at different levels, to accommodate 'spiky profiles'.

At each level, learners who achieve a Pass will be awarded certificates at mode level from University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations.

More information on the levels, modes, timings and price of the examinations.

Who are they for?

The Skills for Life tests are designed for adult (16+) speakers whose home language is not English, who are living or trying to settle in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. These ESOL learners may include refugees or asylum seekers, migrant workers, people from settled communities, and partners or spouses of people who are settled in this country for a number of years.

It is expected that the learners' educational and employment backgrounds will be diverse, as well as their aspirations, literacy levels and language learning skills. This diversity will be reflected in the range of material selected for use in these tests and in the task types which candidates will need to complete.

Candidates will encounter topics in the tests which are both familiar and relevant to them as learners of English. Topics may include:

Convenience

The certificates are available on demand, enabling colleges and other learning providers to offer them at a time that suits both them and their students.

Business English Certificate (BEC)

English for your future: Cambridge ESOL certificates for the world of work
The Business English Certificates

The Business English Certificates (BEC) are internationally recognised qualifications that show employers your skills for using English in the workplace.

BEC is an ideal English language exam if you are preparing for a career in business. There are three different levels of BEC: BEC Preliminary, BEC Vantage and BEC Higher.

Is BEC for you?

If your English language ability is sufficient for most simple communications, such as shopping, you may consider progressing towards BEC. You should have an understanding of, or interest in, the world of work, business and commerce.

Why take BEC?

More than ever, a good knowledge of English is needed to succeed in international business and commerce. If you can show you have relevant language skills, you'll have a great advantage in the jobs market and much greater flexibility if you want to work abroad.

BEC can help you show that you have learned English to an appropriate standard and can use it in a business context.

The BEC exams are aligned with Levels B1 to C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages — an internationally recognised benchmark of language ability. The framework uses six levels to describe language ability, from A1 to C2. 'Can Do' statements have been used to describe these levels in terms of real skills with language, such as being able to write a report, or take a telephone message. This means that preparing for BEC will help you develop real-life skills and the confidence to use them.

BEC is also linked with the UK Qualifications and Curriculum Authority's National Standards for Literacy, within the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

Cambridge ILEC — International Legal English Certificate

Trans Legal

For any lawyer working with international matters, English is an essential tool.

It is the common language of the legal profession, of business and of international affairs.

Employers need to know that the legal staff they appoint have an appropriate level of English to be able to communicate with clients and professionals in other countries, and to be able to deal effectively with material written in English.

Those who have recently qualified as lawyers, or who are still studying, need to be able to show employers that they have these skills.

A high-level language qualification for lawyers

The International Legal English Certificate (Cambridge ILEC) assesses English language ability at Levels B2 and C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) —an internationally recognised benchmark of language ability.

Is Cambridge ILEC for you?

Cambridge ILEC was created to meet the needs of both employers and lawyers. It is also suitable for law students intending to follow courses which include a significant English language content — either in their own country or abroad.

Do you...

If so, Cambridge ILEC might be the right exam for you.

International Certificate in Financial English

Expressway Anglais

Developments such as International Accounting Standards (IAS) are creating international career opportunities for professional accountants. It is essential for individuals who wish to succeed in the international business community to possess first-rate English language skills and the ability to converse with accounting and finance professionals.

To meet the demand for helping finance professionals demonstrate they have the financial English skills they need, University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations and ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) have combined to develop the International Certificate in Financial English (Cambridge ICFE).

ACCA

Cambridge ICFE is set at Levels B2—C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference —an internationally recognised benchmark of language ability.

This certificate can be used as proof of the ability in English necessary to work in an international finance context or to follow a course of accountancy or finance study at university level.

ESOL for Work (UK only)

ESOL for Work

Relevance and reliability, flexibility and quick results … the key requirements for providing ESOL training in the workplace, and the key features of the new Certificates in ESOL for Work from Cambridge ESOL. Visit the ESOL for Work website.

Information for Learners

Cambridge ESOL is the leading provider of English language qualifications in the UK, and has developed the new assessments to meet the needs of employers, and to support migrant and settled workers who are in work or intending to work in England, Wales or Northern Ireland.

Information for Centres

Cambridge ESOL’s Certificates in ESOL for Work are relevant and reliable, because they are based on a well-established, work-related ESOL assessment which has already had thousands of successful candidates and hundreds of satisfied providers around the world.

The provision is flexible and offers quick results, using a combination of computer adaptive technology and the freedom for centres to manage the examinations process for themselves.

The Cambridge ESOL approach to ESOL for Work recognises the “spiky profile” which may exist across the receptive and productive language skills, measuring candidates’ language proficiency in terms of the English they need to use and understand in the workplace. Topics and tasks are work-focussed and are relevant and recognisable to candidates as relating to the ways in which they need to use or respond to language in their working lives in the UK.

The administration and scheduling of the examinations is entirely in the hands of centres, giving them the maximum flexibility to run the assessments when the learners are ready and available, and when it is most convenient for centres, learners and their sponsors.

The three modes are as follows:

Reading and Listening

ESOL for Work Reading and Listening is a Computer Adaptive Test, which means that the test adapts to the level of the candidate. The test is supported by a large bank of secure tasks and quickly provides an accurate assessment of candidate ability. The precise length of the test will vary from candidate to candidate depending upon level of ability. The typical length of the test is 50-60 minutes.

Reading and Listening is assessed on computer, and the marking and grading take place automatically, meaning immediate results.

Speaking

ESOL for Work Speaking is a one-to-one, face-to-face test lasting approximately 12 minutes. It comprises an interview, where the candidate listens and responds; a short presentation, where the candidate speaks to communicate; and a task involving information exchange and engagement in discussion. The interview is recorded, and a second examiner then also awards marks on the candidate’s performance. Marks and recordings are sent to Cambridge for monitoring of marking standards by senior examiners.

Examiners, who are nominated by the centre, must meet Cambridge ESOL’s minimum professional requirements. Before examining, they must undergo self-access examiner training and standardisation and be approved by Cambridge ESOL.

Download ESOL for Work Speaking Sample Test Material

Writing

ESOL for Work Writing is taken on paper, and is comprised of two tasks: the first, a short message or email; and the second, a longer letter or report. Candidates are given a choice of two tasks for the longer response. The Writing test takes 45 minutes.

Centres receive multiple versions of the test and manage their administration. Each completed script is marked by two examiners who have been nominated by the centre. The examiners must meet Cambridge ESOL’s minimum professional requirements and they must undergo self-access examiner training and standardisation and be approved by Cambridge ESOL. Candidate Writing scripts are sent back to Cambridge ESOL for quality assurance purposes, including the monitoring of marking standards by senior examiners.

All Speaking and Writing examiners have to successfully complete a standardisation exercise to show that they can mark to acceptable standards in order to be eligible to examine.

Levels

The ESOL for Work tests developed by Cambridge ESOL measure across all levels from Entry Level 1 to Level 3 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). They also measure across all levels of the Council of Europe Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), from A1 (Elementary) to C2 (Mastery).

At each level, the Certificates in ESOL for Work require up to 150 guided learning hours.

Download Entry 3 and Level 1 test specifications

Results

Candidates can take each ESOL for Work mode (Reading and Listening, Speaking, and Writing) separately. For each mode completed, they receive a Statement of Results with their scores, reported National Qualifications Framework (NQF) levels Entry 1 to Level 3, and Council of Europe Framework (CEF) Levels A1 to C2. As ESOL for Work is currently accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) at NQF levels Entry 3 and Level 1, certificates will be awarded at these levels only. Certificates are issued by Cambridge ESOL when candidates have successfully completed all three modes. Further levels may be accredited in due course.

ESOL for Work recognises that learners may have Speaking, Listening and Reading skills more advanced than their Writing skills. The overall Entry 3 or Level 1 certificates can therefore be awarded to candidates whose Writing skills have been assessed at one level below their achievements in the other units.

Young Learners English (YLE)

The Language Works ~ English for Beginners

In today's world, learning English is a vital skill that will help your children achieve their full potential in later life. The sooner they start learning, the better — with the right methods, children can learn English quickly, effectively and enjoyably. Once they have this initial grasp of English in primary school, they will have a strong foundation which will be an advantage in their later studies.

When children learn English, it is important that they learn English which is practical and useful. It is important that they learn to speak good English and that they work towards international standards that will prepare them for study abroad, or the international world of work.

At Cambridge ESOL we believe that learning should not be stressful for children, it should be fun and stimulating. Their studies should make reading, listening and speaking in English come naturally. As their confidence develops, they will want to learn more and use English to a more challenging level.

An important part of developing that confidence is the support and encouragement you give as a parent — remember, your children need to practise their English as much as possible, including at home.
